Project Title: Panjsher Valley Village Water Supply

Project Summary:
Drinking water supply provision to 18 villages in the Panjsher River Valley in an area of Afghanistan northeast of Kabul (1-day drive). This is an area where Aldo’s organization has been working for some time and has installed drinking water supply systems in several villages. Aldo works with the Massoud Foundation in Afghanistan.
The Panjsher Valley lies northeast of Kabul and in this valley 18 water projects have been surveyed and designed by Aldo Magazzeni, along with a very experienced Afghan engineer and the communities. They will all be gravity-built systems and the source of the water is mountain springs. These springs are used by the communities now and they appear to be clean, safe and adequate.
The problem today is the distance and time required to retrieve the water each day. It takes women and children many trips each day with buckets consuming many hours of their time. Also, the clean water probably becomes contaminated as it is being carried down the long steep mountains. The systems we propose to build would protect the clean water source at the spring by building reinforced cement tanks and then piping approximately one meter below the surface to the villages. There, we would build other cement tanks where the villagers could easily retrieve the water. We would also educate and instruct the communities on the importance of using clean buckets and so not to contaminate the water before consumption.
All materials such as pipe, cement, steel and other materials will be purchased from sources that have been used before and are reliable. The average cost per project in Panjsher is approximately US$7,000 and each will benefit hundreds of men, women and children. In this proposal a list of the 18 projects with details is provided on the attached Table.

Recommendation:
A technical review/assessment is recommended to evaluate water source sustainability and quality. This can be done by a local Afghan firm/NGO. This project could be accomplished in stages depending on level of funding available. PGWI is also looking into leveraging funds from UNICEF-WES and/or USAID in Afghanistan. Vince Uhl met with the head of UNICEF-WES in Kabul in September of 2008 regarding this project and they expressed interest.
Project Steps:
- Assessment of source quantity and quality by Afghan Engineer including laboratory analysis of key chemical constituents and bacteria (Estimate in the range of $2,500).
- Initial Village systems design and installation.
- Start-up of systems.
